County jail construction moves toward upper-level roofing and interior work, county says

A contractor update delivered to the Koochiching County Board on Jan. 14 said construction on the new county jail is progressing on schedule and the project is entering interior finish stages.
Brandon with ICS said concrete masonry units for bearing walls between upper and lower levels are complete, underground mechanical and electrical work is “near 100%” and lower-level slab pours for cell areas have started. ICS reported the building is effectively “dried in” where weather-sensitive work is concerned once membranes and insulation are in place, allowing slab pours in colder weather.
Upcoming work the firm listed includes finishing slab pours, completing mechanical and electrical rough-in, installing interior block and steel-stud framed walls, setting hollow-core upper-level roofing units and moving toward drywall, painting and finish trades. Brandon said site work is scheduled in spring and that, if permitting and procurement align, renovations could begin in March.
County officials asked about courtroom and jury-room tie-ins; Brandon said the project team is coordinating with the courts and a point-of-contact (POC) committee to ensure temporary jury-room accommodations and access during renovation. The courts have already set up a jury room in the basement conference room and installed new jury-technology equipment, staff said.
Why it matters: work to finish interior slabs, mechanical systems and roofing are critical path items that determine when renovations and court-related tie-ins can begin. County staff said coordination among construction, courts and procurement teams will determine whether early-March renovations are feasible.
No formal board action was required for the update; the board accepted the report and asked staff and the contractor to continue scheduling coordination with court administrators.
