The Florence Unified School District governing board on Jan. 14 formally adopted the meeting agenda, elected its 2025 officers, set the regular monthly meeting schedule and approved routine consent items.
At the start of the meeting the board voted to adopt the agenda for its Jan. 14, 2025 regular meeting. The board then elected Roger Beatty as governing board president for 2025 and Megan Wiegand as vice president. The board also set its 2025 regular meeting schedule for the second Tuesday of each month, with work-study sessions beginning at 5:30 p.m. and regular meetings at 6 p.m., and designated the Florence Unified School District administration building and the district website (www.fusdez.org) as the official posting locations for board agendas.
The consent agenda was moved and approved without items pulled for separate consideration. Later in the meeting the board voted to convene into executive session “concerning the hearing officer’s recommendation to expel a student,” and then reconvened to open session. The meeting adjourned after a motion to adjourn carried.
Several routine procedural motions were made and seconded during the meeting; when a motion carried the board president called for a voice vote. One board member later reported having been on mute for a vote and recorded that member’s “yes” vote before adjournment.
Actions recorded in the meeting minutes included agenda adoption, officer elections, schedule-setting, approval of the consent agenda, authorization to enter executive session on an expulsion recommendation, a motion to resume open session, and adjournment. The meeting transcript does not record a roll-call style tally of yes/no votes for all motions in every instance.
The meeting was held at Poston Butte High School (the meeting’s feature school) and included routine recognitions and a public comment in which a parent urged the district to examine suicide postvention practices; a board member later requested that suicide postvention best practices be placed on a future agenda.
