Poston Butte highlights athletics, academics and steps to move from a B to an A school

Poston Butte High School administrators presented student achievements, school performance data and improvement plans to the Florence Unified School District governing board during the board’s Jan. 14 meeting.
Principal Eddie Lopez introduced student body president Stella Bach, who described athletics, academics and extracurricular growth at Poston Butte. Assistant Principal Dr. Burkland reviewed the school’s state letter-grade components, said Poston Butte currently carries a B rating and reported the school was “6 points away from being an A rated school.” Dr. Burkland told the board the school is targeting higher College and Career Readiness Index (CCRI) and proficiency metrics to close the gap.
Dr. Burkland described the CCRI component and the steps Poston Butte is taking to earn more points: expanding career and technical education (CTE) credentials, increasing student participation in the ASVAB Aptitude test, promoting certificates such as medical assisting and graphic design, and adding dual-enrollment college math courses on campus that will carry CAC credit. He said the school also earned five bonus points on state scoring tied to special education and reported growth improvements in ELA and math benchmarks.
“We are 6 points away from being an A rated school,” Dr. Burkland said, and described targeted strategies: increased CTE completers, broader ASVAB participation, certificate attainment and an expanded dual-enrollment math pathway (College Algebra and Introduction to Statistics) that can deliver up to eight college credits in one year through the district’s CAC partnership.
Student body president Stella Bach described fall and winter athletics achievements and credited performing-arts, STEM and student organizations for strengthening school culture. “Poston Butte means a lot to me,” Bach said. She highlighted athletic postseason qualifications, AP art murals, dance concerts and band competition placements.
Administrators also said Poston Butte will host its first Art Proficiency Seal portfolio night (for dance, theater and visual arts) after March; the school reported eight students currently working toward the seal. The administration described use of Albert.io for test-prep practice to improve proficiency on state assessments and said Poston Butte benchmarks are above district average in multiple core subjects.
The presentation closed with student recognitions and staff employee-of-the-month awards.
The board did not take action on the presentation; it was provided as informational material and student recognition.
