Parent urges district to adopt suicide postvention best practices; board places item on future agenda

A Florence parent told the Florence Unified School District Governing Board on Jan. 14 that the district needs clear postvention practices and better communication when a suicide occurs in the school community.
Lindsey Anderson, who identified herself as the parent of eight children with six currently enrolled in district schools, urged board members to adopt “best practices, policies, and procedures” for postvention — the immediate support and communication strategies used after a suicide — and said the district’s response following a recent local death left students and families without needed information. Anderson said children in her household had returned from school with distress and rumors spread via social media because parents did not receive timely information.
“The students that survive the suicide within their community deserve and need the best practices, policies, and procedures in place long before they are needed,” Anderson told the board. She said she would share resources and toolkits from organizations including the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and examples from nearby districts.
After public comment, a board member asked that the district bring a discussion of suicide postvention best practices to a future agenda so board members can review current policies, how those practices are communicated to each campus and how the district coordinates support for students and staff. The board placed the item on a future agenda for discussion; no specific policy change was adopted at the Jan. 14 meeting.
