Committee approves several board appointments and continues one vacancy review

The Governmental Operations Standing Committee considered a series of board vacancy recommendations and voted to forward multiple appointments to council on Jan. 13.
Pamela Nichols, council management analyst, presented candidates and staff recommendations. The committee approved appointments or recommendations for the Audit Committee (business community seats: Kristen Nye and George Sibley III), the Central Virginia Waste Management Authority (Taylor Booker), the City Personnel Board (Stephanie Robertson and Knight Williams), and the Clean City Commission (Beatrice Bracey as 9th District representative). Recorded committee votes were affirmative and recorded as: Member Gibson — Yes; Vice Chair Abubakar — Aye; Chair Jordan — Aye.
The committee also agreed to continue consideration of a Sister Cities Commission vacancy so that an additional applicant can be submitted; staff will include that item in the next quarterly review cycle and requested the committee continue the vacancy through the April meeting. The clerk’s office noted some packets contained duplicate or misfiled applications and committed to update records as appropriate.
Committee members urged outreach to recruit candidates for several small commissions where applications are lacking, including the Urban Forestry Commission. Staff said the Office of the City Clerk is working with the mayor’s appointments staff and will post open positions as appropriate.
