Committee backs bill to establish University of Florida Diabetes Institute
Summary
Senate Bill 816, which would establish the University of Florida Diabetes Institute in statute to coordinate research, education and treatment, was reported favorably after supporters cited research advances and potential federal funding.
The Senate Committee on Education Postsecondary reported Senate Bill 816 favorably after sponsor Senator Bradley described the University of Florida Diabetes Institute as a statutory vehicle to advance research, clinical outcomes and public awareness of diabetes.
Senator Bradley said the Diabetes Institute, founded in 2015 as a coordinating entity, has become a global leader and that the bill would place it in statute to authorize research, prevention, care, education, collaboration and outreach. "It authorizes the institute to focus on research, prevention, care, education, collaboration, and outreach," the sponsor said.
Supporters from the medical community and UF Health waived in to register support. Senator Harrell praised the bill for its research potential and said it would attract federal grants and benefit statewide institutions.
Outcome: The committee called the roll and recorded unanimous yes votes; SB 816 was reported favorably and will move forward in the legislative process.
