Coochiching County commissioners on Feb. 11 discussed a potential lease with the International Falls Police Department (IFPD) for space in the county’s existing Law Enforcement Center (LEC) and voted to present proposed terms to the city for consideration.
County staff summarized the building history and the city’s ongoing search for permanent police space. The county described the First Floor as 9,077 square feet that already contains nine offices, evidence and property rooms, interview rooms and two garage bays (each with roughly 614 sq ft). The county said the basement (6,141 sq ft) houses training and emergency‑operations space and would be shared, as historically arranged, while the first floor could be offered to the city for exclusive use “as is.”
Board members discussed timelines, shared access and renovation expectations. Commissioners proposed an inclusive, as‑is lease price of $15.50 per square foot to cover utilities, maintenance and communications, with the First Floor and both garage bays (approximately 10,305 total square feet including garage space) as the primary leased footprint. For an immediate move‑in option, staff discussed offering the first floor and limited garage access now, with full garage access phased in by Jan. 1, 2026, once county law‑enforcement operations transition to the new LEC.
The board voted to present those proposed terms to the city’s mayor and administrator for their consideration. Commissioners emphasized that any final lease would be negotiated as a formal contract with legal descriptions, timelines and renovation responsibilities spelled out.
