The Arizona State Senate on Jan. 14 extended several internal deadlines, accepted the House’s consent to an adjournment request and placed scores of bills on the second-reading calendar.
President Pro Tem announced, "pursuant to Legislative Council rule 28" the deadline to open Senate folders was extended to Tuesday, Jan. 20 at 5 p.m., and under Legislative Council rule 29 the Senate bill-intro set preparation deadline and the deadline to introduce Senate bills were extended to Monday, Feb. 2. The presiding officer warned members that last-minute filings compress legislative counsel’s time to prepare draft measures.
The clerk read a message from the House of Representatives advising that it acceded to the Senate's request and granted consent for the Senate to adjourn the 57th Legislature, second regular session, after completing its business on Thursday, Jan. 15, 2026, until Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2026. A senator moved that the Senate accept the House request; the motion carried and the secretary was directed to notify the House.
The clerk then read an extensive list of measures placed on second reading, including appropriations for juvenile services and independent correctional oversight, bills addressing election procedures and voter registration, measures on education and early childhood appropriations, health-care-related appropriations and reforms, criminal and public-safety proposals, and several items concerning property taxes and virtual currency. The reading spanned dozens of bill numbers and concurrent resolutions and set the Senate’s calendar for upcoming consideration.
Committees announced their Thursday meeting times (Rules at 9:30 a.m.), and members announced caucus meetings immediately following Rules. A motion to stand adjourned until Thursday, Jan. 15 at 10:00 a.m. carried on the floor vote.
Taken together, the extensions and the placement of many bills on second reading indicate an active early-session legislative schedule and give counsel and stakeholders a short runway to prepare for committee hearings and floor consideration.
