Monroe’s America 250 committee outlines yearlong events; council adopts proclamation

Carrie Mendler of the planning department, chair of Monroe’s America 250 committee, told the council the committee has adopted a mission to connect Monroe’s heritage to national commemorations and previewed planned events including the Feb. 2 Groundhog Day economic summit at the Dowd Center Theater, expanded July 4 activities, patriotic films at the Dow Theater and a proposed Monroe Serves Day for volunteers.
Mendler said the committee selected two logos for marketing and will publish a web page and events calendar. She noted additional events and partnerships remain in development.
Council action: Council member (Speaker 11) moved to adopt a proclamation commemorating the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence; the motion was seconded, the proclamation was read into the record, and the Monroe City Council adopted it.
What’s next: committee staff will return to council with updates on events and logistics as planning continues through 2026.
