Tourism director outlines shoulder‑season plans, Freeride World Tour leverage and heli‑ski season questions
Summary
The tourism director described marketing for shoulder-season events, a migration celebration and outreach to cruise lines and heli‑ski operators; committee members suggested using the Freeride World Tour to promote non‑heli activities and discussed exploring an extended fall/winter heli‑ski season, which would require a code change and Assembly consideration.

The tourism director reported work to build out shoulder‑season events including a migration celebration and a new biodiversity forum and said staff have been engaging with cruise lines and conference contacts to market Haines outside peak season.
Reba said the department is already pursuing marketing for a suite of activities—rafting, fishing, shrimp‑pot checks and community experiences—so visiting events like the Freeride World Tour can highlight more than heli‑skiing. “We do plan on having available a lot of activities for people to do and being able to capture that and market that as well,” Reba said.
Committee members and local operators discussed whether heli‑skiing could be extended into fall and whether that would require a code change. Staff and the clerk noted that tour‑permit timing and any season extensions would require code amendments and Assembly action; end‑of‑season reports from tour operators were due November 1 and staff plans to present a compiled summary to the Assembly on November 18.
Members asked staff to work with the tourism advisory board and communications team to broaden promotion during one‑time events and to return with statistics and a draft plan for possible season extensions or code changes.
