Library staff presented an update to the Library and Literacy Commission on Dec. 10 covering October and November statistics, program highlights and two minor editorial changes to the borrowing policy. Commissioners moved to accept the staff recommendations and provided general consensus to adopt the changes.
In a slideshow tying monthly statistics to the library’s literacy initiatives, staff reported 1,590 items added in October and 1,098 items added in November, repairs of 187 items in October and 150 in November, and a steady schedule of outreach and bookmobile stops. "We had 129 responses" to a public survey about the story garden patio, a staff presenter said, summarizing preferences for outdoor seating, programming space, or both.
Staff listed regular programs across age groups — Mother Goose, preschool and family story times, Reading Dragons for school‑age readers, teen take‑and‑make kits and adult programs such as Tech Tuesdays and an Alzheimer’s support group. Festival of Trees partners drew 134 people on opening night; staff said partners included the Fairbanks Chess Club, UAF Osher Lifelong Learning and Alzheimer's Resource Alaska.
On the borrowing policy (G1A), staff recommended striking the redundant word "wishing" after "age of 18" and removing the phrase "meet the same requirements" for signing adults accompanying minors. A commissioner moved to approve the recommendations and another seconded; commissioners indicated consensus to accept the edits. The consent agenda earlier in the meeting included approval of minutes from Sept. 10, 2025 and the agenda itself was adopted by roll call.
Commissioners asked staff to provide a written report of survey results and additional detail about the post‑expansion patio size; staff agreed to circulate that information in the next update. The commission adjourned at 5:07 p.m.
