The Higher Education Coordinating Commission requested retroactive approval to apply for a competitive federal grant from the U.S. Department of Education worth $2.5 million to design and launch short-term Pell-eligible credentialing programs and provide technical assistance for workforce credentialing.
“For the record, Tom Riel, director of operations for the Higher Education Coordinating Commission,” Riel said. He described the intended use of $2.5 million to support short-term training programs and to provide technical assistance for program design and data systems linking learners to jobs. Riel said there was no match required and HECC would not request additional FTEs.
Riel told the subcommittee the agency learned through a press release that it was not on the federal awards list; the agency had not yet received direct federal notice. DAS and LFO recommended approval of the agency’s request to retroactively apply; a co-chair moved the request to the full committee with the LFO recommendation and the subcommittee recorded no objections.
Next steps: the item was forwarded to the full committee for consideration; HECC did not receive the award based on the information available in committee.
