Sheriff Gardner reports deputy hiring progress, background checks eliminate some applicants

Sheriff Brian Gardner updated the board Dec. 2 on staffing at the Linn County Sheriff's Office, describing ongoing background investigations and next steps for hiring.
"We are working our way through the background investigations for deputy sheriff applicants," Gardner said, noting that the office had to eliminate some applicants based on background findings. He said the office plans to interview additional deputy candidates next week and hopes to complete backgrounds so more interviews can occur before the holidays.
Gardner added that the county is also hiring civilian detention officers and that this hiring track has proceeded "a little smoother" than the cadet/deputy process. He noted one deputy who had served about three years submitted a resignation to move back to Texas and expected to join a former agency there.
Sheriff Gardner said overall things were "running smoothly" and that he had no major problems to report; he also mentioned travel to Des Moines for a conference later that day.
