Veteran Services reports increased throughput, outreach and emergency SNAP assistance to veterans

Dustin Peterson, Linn County Veteran Services director, told the Board that the department had spent $285,181 of a $775,000 budget (about 37 percent) as of Nov. 21 and that services to veterans remained in high demand.
Peterson said Veterans Services served 141 veterans in October, 109 for federal VA benefits, and that improved staffing has reduced appointment wait times to about 3–4 days. He described outreach events — including the Cedar Valley Veterans Network — and a recent partnership with community groups that supported Thanksgiving meal deliveries to veterans.
On emergency assistance, Peterson reported four emergency needs in October totaling $6,170 and said a temporary SNAP assistance program provided $2,345 in food assistance to 13 veterans while the federal SNAP program was disrupted. He said the office is closely tracking federal policy and funding discussions that could affect service animals and other programs.
Peterson also reported that, according to a FY24 VA geographic distribution report, Linn County’s veteran population declined modestly and that roughly 27.7 percent of the county’s veterans are connected to federal benefits. He said county staff are pursuing additional outreach in rural areas and continuing partnerships to reach eligible veterans.
The board did not take action; Peterson said an appointment to fill a vacant commission seat (Pamela Zane’s seat) will be added to the Board agenda for consideration before Dec. 10.
