Commission sets May 2 Huber Heights art show, outlines categories, vendors and registration timeline

The Huber Heights Arts & Beautification Commission confirmed plans Jan. 20 for a community art exhibit connected to the city’s America250 activities.
Chair Sarah Chapman said Melissa Gwynn will lead the effort. Commissioners confirmed the exhibit date as May 2, with hours from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Senior Center. The commission agreed on categories for youth and adult entrants and said adult visual art categories will include oil, watercolor, acrylic, drawing, mixed media (collage), photography, graphic design, fabric art and sculpture. The commission discussed possibly consolidating categories but left detailed category structure to staff and the event lead.
The commission agreed that artwork must be recent and hand-made by the artist (not older than three years), and that offensive or explicit content would be excluded. They said judging will be done in a closed room, with first, second and third places in each category and an overall people’s choice award; the commission also discussed a potential mayor’s choice award.
To help recover event costs, staff proposed charging $20 per vendor table for artists who wish to sell work. Commissioners discussed whether artists who are entered in the judged show should also be charged to vend; the commission agreed that display entry is free and that vendor tables are separate (staff will refine rules). The Senior Center will not provide concessions for the event because senior center volunteers will be on a trip; the commission discussed handling concessions themselves or asking another community group to manage them.
On a motion and second, the commission voted to open registration for the exhibit (staff will publish registration details and a deadline; commissioners discussed a Feb. 15 registration opening and an April 15 entry deadline). Staff committed to circulate facility rules for use of the Senior Center kitchen and to provide final timing for the registration posting.
Commissioners agreed to recruit judges from local art teachers, gallery owners and college art faculty. They also discussed volunteer needs for setup and staffing and planned outreach materials — a flyer is ready and staff said it could be posted as early as Monday following the meeting.
The commission approved the registration motion by voice vote. Staff will return with final registration dates and logistics at the Feb. 18 meeting if adjustments are needed.
