Commissioners honor veterans, note expansion of county veteran services

Boulder County commissioners on Nov. 4 read a proclamation recognizing Veterans Day and heard from county Veteran Service Officers about efforts to expand services and help veterans secure benefits.
Nick Morgan, an accredited veteran service officer, thanked the board for funding a third veteran service officer post and described how the additional staff increases outreach and helps veterans navigate VA disability, housing and other benefits. Morgan cited a case in which advocacy moved a veteran’s claim from 0% to 100% service connection and secured more than $52,000 in back pay.
Joseph Westbrook, another county veterans service officer, described additional appeals work, including cases that produced six‑figure back payments, and stressed racial, gender and disability inequities in VA claim approvals that the office seeks to address. Both speakers said the additional staff capacity will help reach more veterans and reduce disparities in access to benefits.
The board read a proclamation noting Boulder County is home to over 14,000 active‑duty, reserve and veteran service members and proclaimed Nov. 11, 2025, as Veterans Day in the county. The chair invited veterans present to a group photo and the board adjourned the business meeting.
