Head Start reports steady enrollment, meal counts and a projected FY deficit

Boulder County Head Start staff updated commissioners on program operations, attendance and finances at the Nov. 18 meeting.
Zakani Ogren, Head Start division manager, reported that in October the program delivered 6,660 meals through Boulder Valley School District food service and served 4,888 meals based on attendance. Ogren said the meal cost for October was $19,147.50, with a CACFP reimbursement of $14,476.13, making the net monthly cost to the Head Start program $4,671.38. Program-funded enrollment is 110 slots and current enrollment stands at 109; average attendance since August through October is 79 percent.
Ogren said the program is monitoring federal developments, including the status of Region 8 training and technical assistance and the ongoing notice of funding opportunities. Staff reported a projected fiscal year deficit of about $139,000 as of reconciliation through October. Ogren also described school readiness goals focused on social-emotional development, expressive language, and number concepts, and noted checks on progress in February and again in spring.
The board had no questions beyond thanking staff; Ogren added that the program recently distributed $10,000 in grocery gift cards to 43 SNAP families to bridge shortfalls due to SNAP funding disruptions.
Next steps: Head Start will continue monitoring funding opportunities, report on progress toward school-readiness goals and seek to address projected deficit through budget reconciliation and pursuing available grants.
