Local volunteers advance Mesa Road historic‑linear resource work, retain consultant

Judy, a member of the volunteer preservation group reporting to the Historic Preservation Board, told the board on Jan. 5 that the Mesa Road historic‑linear resource project has advanced and that the group retained consultant Ron Sladek to prepare a preliminary report to History Colorado.
Judy said the group has compiled roughly 300–400 documents tracing Mesa Road’s use back to Native American routes and described examples including Ute travel corridors and later improvements by General William Jackson Palmer. She said the consultant "wouldn't take a project if he didn't think it would fly," and reported Council Member Donaldson attended a recent meeting and felt the City Council would likely approve the project unanimously.
Judy also said the volunteer group has secured an employer identification number from the IRS and expects 501(c)(3) status in March, which will help with a small operating budget. The board briefly discussed outreach and documentation needs and congratulated the team on the progress.
Board members suggested coordinating with nearby preservation groups and reminded one another to share research and owner‑contact information when appropriate. No formal board action or vote on the Mesa Road project was taken during the meeting; the update was informational and the board asked staff to continue coordination as needed.
