Council members heard a series of staff announcements on Jan. 13 about local services and community engagement opportunities.
Michael reported that veteran services have begun offering walk-in assistance at Newman City Hall on the first and third Wednesdays of the month, allowing local veterans to access benefits paperwork and counseling without traveling to Modesto. He said the city will publicize the service via social media and upcoming mailers once the county-approved flyer is ready.
Thomas (Public Works staff) reminded residents that leaf-and-brush pickup runs through March 31 and requested that piles be placed one foot from the curb for collection. He also asked the public to attend community workshops on the T Street corridor plan and the city's safety action plan, scheduled for tomorrow at 2 p.m. and again at 6 p.m. He noted the countywide point-in-time count of unhoused people is scheduled for Jan. 29 and that local volunteers typically assist.
Allie (recreation staff) said the youth basketball league has started and will run through February; adult basketball will be held Fridays and Sundays from 6 to 9 p.m. at Yolo Middle School.
No formal council action was required for these announcements.
