Stamford wins $5 million Cummings Park grant; board authorizes one-to-one local match

Stamford City staff told the Planning Board on Aug. 8 that the city received a $5 million grant award for Cummings Park and requested authorization to provide the required one-for-one local match. Lou Casalow and Erin McKenna presented the scope of work drawn from the city’s master plan.
Staff said the grant award requires a 1:1 match and noted prior capital requests have incrementally sought that match (including a recent $1.6 million request). The projects within the grant scope include parking-lot reconstruction (with new tree plantings where feasible), improvements to tennis/pickleball and basketball courts, renovations to restrooms and the pavilion (including maintenance storage space), baseball-field work and scour-wall installation to protect West Beach parking. Erin said the parking-lot design is completed and staff is prepared to bid the work.
Board members asked about incorporating additional shade trees and heat‑island mitigation measures consistent with the 2015 master plan; staff said tree plantings will be incorporated into the parking-lot work where space permits and that a public process will inform decisions for some park areas. The board approved the appropriation for the local match by voice vote, carrying the motion unanimously.
Staff said they will proceed with procurement steps for the parking-lot work and continue public engagement for other park elements.
