The Greensboro City Council used a portion of its Nov. 10 meeting to adopt several ceremonial resolutions recognizing longtime civic leaders, artists and a championship sports team.
Council unanimously approved a resolution renaming the Barber Park Event Center the "Yvonne J. Johnson Event Center" to honor the former mayor pro tem and community leader. Councilmember Hoffman introduced the resolution and family members accepted a replica plaque; speakers recounted Johnson's roughly 30 years of service to Greensboro and her work on boards and civic organizations.
Council also adopted a resolution recognizing the Carolina Cowboys as the 2025 Professional Bull Riders (PBR) World Champions. Jerome Davis, head coach, and team representatives thanked the city and said the team plans to display the championship buckle at local events during the year.
A separate resolution honored the life and work of Murphy Anderson, a Greensboro native noted for a long career in comic books; a commemorative plaque will be installed at the Greensboro Cultural Arts Center. The council additionally recognized the 125th anniversary of the city's public water system and presented staff for long‑running investments and recent upgrades including PFAS investigation and treatment work.
Mayor Nancy Vaughn read a proclamation declaring November 2025 as Youth Hope Month, highlighting local nonprofit Youth Focus and its collaborations to help runaway, homeless and at‑risk youth.
All ceremonial items were adopted by voice vote and the council hosted family members and guests for brief remarks and photos.
