Erie Town Council on Dec. 9 approved a site plan and special‑use review for an expansion of the Erie Police Department campus.
Senior Planner Harry Brennan presented the project, describing a roughly 30,000‑square‑foot, two‑story addition to an existing building of just under 18,000 square feet, producing a combined facility of just under 50,000 square feet. The proposal adds 73 parking spaces to take the site from 86 to 159 spaces to accommodate public parking, officer parking and fleet needs. The plan includes a security fence and gated secure access for officer parking; Chief Lee Mathis described a gate with a pad and a signal that opens for responding patrol cars.
Planning Commission had unanimously recommended approval and staff found the project consistent with the comprehensive plan. Council members asked about soils/geotechnical review, view impacts for nearby neighbors and referral‑agency coordination; staff said the site is not undermined and geotechnical measures (rammed‑earth piers) are planned. After discussion the council voted to approve the site plan (resolution 25.206) and the special‑use review (resolution 25.207). A groundbreaking was announced for the coming Thursday at 11 a.m.; staff estimated a two‑year construction schedule.
