Council amends public‑hearing notice rules to allow flexible property descriptions in notices

Erie — The Erie Town Council unanimously approved an ordinance on Nov. 4 to amend public‑hearing notice requirements in Title 10 of the Erie Municipal Code.
Principal planner Chris LaRue explained the ordinance would codify language from Ordinance 11‑2021 that had not been enacted into the municipal code. The change gives staff flexibility to identify properties in notices by street address, legal description, nearest cross streets or by map, reducing the need to publish long metes-and-bounds text in newspapers. LaRue said the planning commission reviewed the change on Sept. 3, recommended approval and heard no public comment. The proposed ordinance also removes an obsolete reference to a protest provisions subsection that no longer exists in the code.
Council moved, seconded and voted to approve the ordinance (listed in the packet as Ordinance 33‑20‑25). The council closed the public hearing and approved the code change by voice vote.
Quote: "They identify date, time, and place of the public hearing... and we're proposing to identify the property subject to the application," LaRue told council.
Next steps: Staff will update notice templates and user guides and codify the language in the municipal code.
