Resident urges fireworks ban; council and police discuss enforcement and outreach

During the public comment period, Erie resident Betty Williams urged the Town Council to adopt a resolution banning the sale, use and possession of consumer fireworks, citing risks to residents, pets and property and referencing Lafayette’s recent ban. Williams told the council fireworks created noise pollution and safety risks in neighborhoods and urged Erie to follow other Colorado jurisdictions (SEG 124–179).

In council reports later in the meeting, Mayor and council members revisited the topic. Police Chief Lee Mathis said the department receives a very high volume of fireworks calls on July 4 and is often delayed in responding because life‑safety calls take priority. “We have received several complaints about not being able to respond to fireworks calls … There are such a volume of calls that it's very difficult for us to get there right when they call,” Mathis said (SEG 2166–2175). He said the department plans to try to staff extra cars for fireworks calls next year but cautioned there is no guarantee of two‑minute responses.

Council discussed outreach ideas including public education campaigns and alternatives such as drone shows; Mayor suggested year‑round communications to explain how fireworks can affect veterans, pets and elderly residents. The council did not take formal action on a fireworks ban at this meeting.

Other public commenters, including Lou Miller, promoted community events: a balloon festival, an upcoming paint recycling drive that donated recycled paint to Habitat for Humanity, and a peach sale fundraiser (SEG 181–234).
