Parks director Phil Fleischman receives statewide meritorious service award; council recognizes his local impact

Greensboro City Council on Jan. 6 recognized Phil Fleischman, director of Parks & Recreation, after he received the North Carolina Recreation and Park Association’s meritorious service award.
Assistant City Manager McCray praised Fleischman’s leadership, noting revitalized neighborhood parks, inclusion programs and partnerships across departments and nonprofits. Michelle Wells, executive director of the North Carolina Recreation and Park Association, said Fleischman "approaches leadership with humility, empathy, and a deep sense of purpose" and cited his work on the city's Plan to Play master plan and expanded accessibility initiatives.
Fleischman accepted the award, thanked staff and council, and highlighted the department’s focus on equitable access, inclusion programs and partnerships with universities and community groups. He invited residents to connect with parks and recreation offerings and acknowledged the contributions of his staff.
The recognition was presented as a ceremonial item; the council and attendees congratulated Fleischman and encouraged continued investment in parks and recreation programs and facilities.
