Road & Bridge gets approval to solicit bids for trucks, orders pipe inventory after price increases

Coffey County’s Road & Bridge supervisor won approval to solicit bids for replacement pickups and a survey truck, and to purchase corrugated pipe and end sections for inventory as quarry prices rose for some rock products this year.
Road and Bridge Supervisor Adam Hoake told the commission Jan. 20 that several department pickups are at the end of their service life and recommended soliciting formal bids to replace three 1-ton double-cab trucks and a half-ton survey truck. Commissioners approved motions to solicit bids with optional trade-ins and to fund purchases from the General Fund Public Works equipment line.
Hoake also reported 2026 quarry price quotes showing a small increase on some materials and a $5-per-ton jump for the G50 six-inch rock. To mitigate the impact, staff proposed using large rock stockpiled at the landfill and renting a breaker attachment to reduce and reuse material. The commission approved accepting the quarry quotations as presented and authorized inventory purchases of corrugated pipe and end sections funded from the Road & Bridge budget.
The board also approved closing the landfill on Saturday, July 4, 2026, per the superintendent’s recommendation. The motions to solicit bids and to purchase inventory passed unanimously. The commission directed staff to proceed with bid solicitations and report back when bids are received.
