Summary
Council unanimously approved a $50,000 donation from the Charles J. Strosacker Foundation to fund maintenance work at Troon Park, including resurfacing play areas and rebuilding structures; funds require a general‑fund budget amendment.
The Midland City Council voted on Oct. 13 to accept a $50,000 donation from the Charles J. Strosacker Foundation to cover major maintenance at Troon Park.
Karen Murphy told the council that Troon Park — last renovated in 2009 with Strosacker support — reached a five‑year maintenance milestone. The recommended work includes re‑staining concrete letters and the painted circular walkway, resurfacing the splash pad safety surface and rubber surfacing around playground elements, and rebuilding a deteriorating alligator bridge. Murphy said some work will be contracted out and some done in‑house.
The resolution would amend the general fund to increase both revenue and park operating expenditures by $50,000 so the work can move forward; Karen Murphy said some projects could start this fall while others may finish in spring. Council members expressed strong support and thanked the foundation; the motion passed with a unanimous voice vote recorded as four‑zero.
The appropriation requires the usual purchasing and contracting processes, and park staff said they will mix contracted work with in‑house labor to stretch the gift further.
