Haines Borough canvasses 14 late/question ballots and updates unofficial election totals

The Haines Borough Assembly on Oct. 14 approved canvassing 14 ballots that were either absentee, questioned, or special-needs ballots received by the clerk after election night but before the canvass deadline.
Clerk Denker explained the canvass process and recommended the 14 ballots be counted under HBC 11.48.020. The assembly moved and approved the canvass by voice vote.
After tallying the added ballots, the clerk read updated unofficial totals: Gabe Thomas led municipal assembly results with 597 votes, Evan Sargent had 561, and other local contests and the school-board and planning commission totals were adjusted accordingly. The clerk reported borough voter turnout at 45.8 percent (1,115 ballots cast of 2,432 registered voters). The assembly scheduled formal certification of the election for Oct. 28.
Clerk Denker thanked election staff and volunteers for the canvass and noted that the clerk will post the updated unofficial results on the borough meeting website later that night.
