The Assembly resumed debate Oct. 28 over appointments to the seven-member Ports & Harbors Advisory Committee following a recent resignation. The mayor described two applicants and recommended Diana Lapham for a seat; public commenters and some members urged consideration of Cynthia Adams, a commercial fisherperson.
Don Turner Jr., who recently resigned a seat, said the Portrait Harbor seat is noncommercial but raised concerns about whether Cynthia Adams — who fishes commercially and spends winters away — could meet attendance expectations. Kristen Hathorn publicly supported Adams, saying her experience with docks and harbors would benefit the committee.
Assembly members reviewed borough code requiring committee composition of two representatives with commercial-vessel experience, two with noncommercial-vessel experience, one tariff-regulated representative and two community members at large. Several members said the borough needs to maintain a balance of expertise and that vacancies should be put out for public notice for the specific seat types rather than swapped informally.
No final appointment was made tonight; staff will advertise the vacancies and return nominations at a later date when the Assembly can consider the applicants alongside the advertised pool.
