Assembly members also questioned the practicality of the ASE-only inspection. One member suggested keeping ASE language but adding a fallback allowing the borough to inspect the vehicle if no ASE mechanic is available; another proposed creating an approved list of inspectors. Staff and the borough attorney agreed that the borough could add criteria and a roster of approved inspectors to reduce reliance on a single ASE mechanic and to address liability concerns.
Members noted that national rideshare platforms (Uber, Lyft) effectively do not operate in the borough because of market size. The assembly decided not to pass the taxicab ordinance tonight and instead to prepare more detailed language and an approved-inspector list to present at the next meeting.
