The Town of Lakeville Community Preservation Committee on Jan. 15 voted to recommend a $15,000 Step 2 grant for gravestone repairs at Thompson Hill Cemetery and approved a $20,000 contribution from CPC funds toward restoration of the bell cupola at the Lakeville Historical Museum.
Committee members said the cemetery work continues prior phases that reset and repaired numerous older stones and supports the community’s effort to place Thompson Hill on the National Register of Historic Places. The application sought $15,000 to reset and repair gravestones in sections A through D and had attached maps and historic documentation. “They’re doing a great job on the gravestones,” an attendee told the committee during discussion, noting previous successful rounds of work and public interest in the project.
Robert (at‑large) moved to approve the Step 2 application and recommend the appropriation to Town Meeting; an unnamed committee member seconded the motion and the committee approved it by voice vote. The committee chair said staff will prepare a short write‑up for Town Meeting and route the recommendation to town staff for inclusion on the warrant.
Separately, the committee reviewed an invoice for restoration work on the Lakeville Historical Museum’s bell cupola. The vendor’s invoice totaled $28,800 for lift rental, shutter removal and off‑site restoration, wood repairs and flashing work; the museum requested $20,000 from CPC funds and indicated it would cover remaining costs from other sources. The committee moved, seconded and approved contributing $20,000 from CPC funds toward the cupola work.
Both approvals were routine voice votes recorded on the meeting record. Committee members said they would post before‑and‑after photos and update the CPC project pages once additional photos and invoices are submitted. The committee did not specify individual vote tallies in the minutes beyond the recorded affirmative voice votes.
Next procedural steps: the cemetery funding recommendation will be forwarded for consideration at Town Meeting and the museum will receive the approved CPC funds once the grant agreement and invoice processing are completed.
