Arizona House opens session; ASU and U of A coaches address members

The Arizona House of Representatives convened for the second regular session of the 50th Legislature with ceremonial remarks, a prayer, and presentations from guests including doctors and university coaches.

Dr. Jason Jamieson was introduced as the "Doctor of the Day" and recognized for his leadership with the Arizona Medical Association and his clinical and academic work. The presiding officer recorded attendance as 59 present, one absent.

Kenny Dillingham, head football coach at Arizona State University, told members that sport can unite communities and build local pride. "Number 1 is be a good person," Dillingham said, describing the three pillars his program emphasizes: character, decision-making and work ethic. He urged the chamber to "activate the valley" to keep students and talent in Arizona.

University of Arizona head coach Tommy Lloyd addressed lawmakers after Dillingham, opening with the premise "Talent is the new currency." Lloyd told members that retaining people requires a culture of integrity, stability and support, and said leadership choices in the Capitol help shape whether graduates and professionals remain in state. He closed his remarks with the program's rallying cry, "Bear down."

The ceremonial portion also included the presentation of colors by a Luke Air Force Base Honor Guard, the pledge of allegiance led by Adeline Abigail Montenegro, and musical performances by the Valley Vista Cloudburst Choir directed by Preston McDonald. The speaker encouraged civility and framed the session as a stewardship for Arizona's people.

The House then moved into organizational and procedural business that included motions to amend and adopt House rules and the appointment of standing committees.

Next steps: the House proceeded with committee appointments and the first reading of bills before adjourning to a later time.
