Summary
Presenters asked the council to help promote fundraising for the Socorro Mission restoration; phase 1 is 95% complete on the church preservation and phase 2 work (drainage, structural stabilization, HVAC and roofing) requires about $2.7 million in total. Council pledged help with promotion and historical grant research and encouraged volunteer support.
Representatives of the Together for the Socorro Mission restoration campaign told the council Jan. 15 that the restoration has a $2.7 million budget and that phase 1 preservation work on the church is about 95% complete. Presenters said phase 2 will address drainage, install structural electrical piers, remove rooftop AC units that stress adobe walls, upgrade the HVAC system and replace the roof.
Marty Loya and Magda Mabrera said they had distributed solicitation materials to about 100 local businesses and institutions and plan a major fundraising event in October to coincide with the Pueblo of Socorro anniversary. The group said they hope to raise at least $2 million in donor commitments so the project can obtain a loan for remaining costs.
Council members thanked the presenters, discussed historical grant opportunities and offered to help promote the campaign through city channels. Staff clarified that local government funds can only be used for certain improvements and that the city’s most practical role would be promotion and advocacy, not direct capital support for diocesan property. Presenters requested sponsorships, volunteers and promotion assistance.
Separately, the council recognized 3 Missions Brewery as small business of the quarter and celebrated City Manager Adriana Rodarte’s selection for the Texas Women's Leadership Institute; both items were presented during the same meeting section.
