Calvert County issues holiday proclamations, presents DUI awards and approves routine appointments

Prince Frederick — The Calvert County Board of County Commissioners used Tuesday's meeting to present community proclamations, recognize local nonprofit and law‑enforcement work, and approve routine administrative actions.
Candice d d'Agostino, coordinator of the Calvert Alliance Against Substance Abuse, accepted a proclamation designating Dec. 1–Jan. 2 as Designated Driver Month and presented awards to top DUI‑arresting officers from the Calvert County Sheriff's Office and Maryland State Police. "Those are 360 individuals that could have easily avoided the risk ... if they had just done the simple thing of getting a designated driver," said State's Attorney Robert Harvey, who told the board his office prosecuted about 360 impaired‑driving cases last year.
The board also designated Dec. 2 as Southern Maryland Day of Giving and hosted representatives from local nonprofits — including Leadership Southern Maryland, the Arts Council of Calvert County, the American Chestnut Land Trust, Hospice of the Chesapeake, Project ECHO and others — who described outreach efforts and concerns about outreach and mailings for public input.
April Coleman, deputy director of Animal Services, brought "Cupcake," a seven‑month‑old Chinese dwarf hamster, and described shelter adoption promotions that have reduced senior‑pet populations. The board noted upcoming holiday events including a courthouse tree lighting and community parades.
Staff recommended and the board approved multiple appointments: Mike Benton to the Commission for Veteran and Military Families; Aaron Farley and Dr. Megan Noyes to the Animal Matters Hearing Board; and Kristen Fuller and Michael Bennett to the Calvert Marine Museum Board of Governors. The board also approved the consent agenda, which included grant applications and project approvals across Public Works, Parks & Recreation and Public Safety.
What happened next: The board moved on to public hearings and work sessions on the master plan and preservation rules.
