Planning commission approves entrance corridor sign for 150 Walker Street

The Planning Commission voted to approve an entrance corridor certificate of appropriateness (EC2026-01) for new signage at 150 Walker Street after staff said the proposal met zoning criteria.

Planning staff told the commission the application is for a general retail store use rather than a personal improvement service and noted the frontage requirement is 40 feet carried over from a prior Rockbridge Barbell listing. "Staff does find that the proposed improvements meet the zoning criteria," staff said during the presentation.

The applicant, Mines., spoke for the record and described the work as an upcycling of the existing Rockbridge Barbell sign: "We're just getting vinyl so we can reuse all the material from the sign. It's not lighted... we're just switching out the acrylic for that," Mines. said. Staff showed a mockup of the tenant sign and the multi-tenant cabinet included in the packet (staff referred commissioners to the signage standards on page 9 of the application packet).

A commissioner questioned whether a fourth paragraph under the applicable signage regulations applied to this request; staff and commissioners agreed the paragraph did not apply and recommended striking it from the application text. Following that clarification, Commissioner Speaker 2 moved to approve the entrance corridor COA EC2026-01 "for new signage at 150 Walker Street as proposed by the applicant;" Commissioner Speaker 4 seconded. Staff noted it expects future separate sign or window requests for the site that are not part of this approval, and the commission corrected a clerical agenda error so the approved item will be recorded as ECCOA 2026-01 rather than the 2025 identifier that appeared in the packet.
