Commission approves up to $50,000 to fix jail doors after design error

"My stance, we need to make it whole the way it should be designed," Unidentified Speaker 1 said, arguing replacing the door is preferable to temporary fixes such as an air curtain.
Commissioners asked whether less-costly alternatives were possible and whether the county could recoup costs from the contractor. Speakers said an air curtain would still require new power and equipment and that the issue appears to be a specification error attributable to the architect. Unidentified Speaker 4 urged approving repairs now so the county retains leverage to recover costs.
The body then moved and approved a construction change directive (CCD 003) not to exceed $50,000 to replace the door and address the related HVAC and energy issues. The motion passed on a voice vote.
The decision follows project leaders’ reporting that Blaine Construction has taken steps to limit cost growth and that, while the project exceeded original timelines and estimates, the building is expected to serve county needs for decades.
