Portsmouth — The Portsmouth City Council honored the Virginia Gators 9U United Youth Football and Cheerleading team and proclaimed Jan. 13, 2026 as a celebration day recognizing the team’s UYFL national championship.
Mayor Shannon E. Glover read a proclamation citing the team’s dedication, sportsmanship and representation of Portsmouth on a national stage. The proclamation named players and coaches and commended the organization’s leadership, including president Justin Jewell.
Justin Jewell, president of the Virginia Gators Athletics Organization, thanked Portsmouth Parks & Recreation, local nonprofits including Stop the Violence, and the many parents and volunteers who supported the team. “We wanted to bring those great athletes from around Hampton Roads back to Portsmouth,” Jewell said, noting outreach and local staff connections to the city.
The council invited the team and coaches for photos and public recognition at the meeting before proceeding with the regular agenda.
