Revere board to invite Dr. Oberhauser to discuss middle-school PE, lunchtime activity and staffing

The Revere Board of Education agreed to invite Dr. Oberhauser to a February work session after an extended discussion about middle‑school physical education and ways to increase student activity.

Board members and parents described community requests for more regular physical activity for middle‑school students and flagged three primary constraints: available gym and outdoor space, staff capacity to supervise additional activity, and the school schedule. One board member said Dr. Oberhauser had provided initial enrollment and offering data and was "happy to come to a work session based on questions".

Participants discussed several approaches: adding elective PE sections where feasible, creating voluntary lunchtime activity options for students who wish to be active, and structuring short daily activity periods. Parents cautioned that mandatory outdoor recess in winter has been unpopular in other districts and that different students respond differently to unstructured activity; others suggested small focus groups of students, athletic staff and mental‑health professionals to design programs.

Board members stressed communication and piloting options: one suggested explaining the rationale to students (mental‑health benefits tied to exercise) to encourage participation. The board agreed the district should explore options for the next school year while recognizing staffing and space likely limit any immediate large expansion.
