Marshall Mesa trailhead nears reopening after mitigation, restoration work

Open Space staff provided an update Jan. 14 on the Marshall Mesa Trailhead redesign and restoration.
Eileen Flack described coordination with the Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety, which mitigated about nine acres to roughly 30 feet to address a smoldering coal seam. Staff said restoration seeding established well and crews preserved access to the site through a temporary connector trail while construction progressed.
Flack said the Mountain View Fire Protection District installed a fire protection cistern on OSMP property and FEMA worked on replacing the vault restroom lost in the Marshall Fire; the new restroom is in place. Trailhead plans include shuttle drop-off, accessible parking and trails built to outdoor recreation accessibility guidelines; staff also plans interpretation focused on prairie and fire ecology and an "eco-healing" component created with youth input.
Staff aims to open the trailhead in the next month, finish interpretation and plantings in spring, and host a grand opening in May. Trustees praised staff and asked that volunteers and youth groups who helped with interim trail work be recognized at the opening.
