Safe Routes to School sidewalk work prompts Everard Avenue parking removal for public hearing

City planning staff told the Revere City Traffic Commission on Jan. 15 that a Safe Routes to School project will widen sidewalks near Beechmont School and that removing parking on Everard Avenue is necessary to accommodate the work.
Julie DeMarr of the Department of Planning and Community Development said the state will fund roughly $1.4 to $1.5 million in improvements around Beechmont School, Belisle Avenue, Cottage Street and Cummings Park. She said the plan is to extend the existing roughly 4-foot sidewalk by about 6 feet to create a 10-foot sidewalk, leaving insufficient curb space to retain parking on the subject block.
Staff requested the commission set a public hearing to consider eliminating parking on Everard Avenue between the school driveway area and Belle Isle Avenue; the commission voted to send the matter to a February public hearing. Councilor James McCurrier said he will reserve comments until he has discussed the plan with neighbors and reviewed details.
