The Skokie Planning Commission voted Jan. 15 to recommend approval of a special‑use permit allowing an automotive repair facility at 8255 Christiana, a site in the M‑2 Light Industry district, with conditions intended to protect adjacent properties and the sewer system.
Staff recommended approval for Case 2025‑22P, describing the proposed operation as a small‑scale repair business with four work bays, indoor storage and 14 off‑street parking spaces. Staff said all mechanical work will be conducted inside the building, and recommended a required oil/water separator (triple catch basin) to prevent pollutants from entering the sewer system; staff also proposed standard conditions limiting outdoor storage, setting a 10‑day limit for vehicles stored outdoors, and requiring development to match final approved plans.
Petitioner testimony in the hearing included a representative identified in staff materials as "Jafar Sangtrash" (staff slide language) and a self‑identification in testimony as "Jafar Sankaraj." The petitioner said the business (GA & B Transmissions and Auto Repair) would relocate from Evanston and maintain the same operation and staffing levels; petitioners said they intend to engage with the community and to provide vocational opportunities for local high‑school students. Staff and commissioners confirmed the triple catch basin requirement would be reviewed at building‑permit and certificate‑of‑occupancy inspections.
A motion to approve the special‑use permit with staff‑recommended conditions carried unanimously on a roll‑call vote. Chair reminded the petitioner that the Plan Commission’s recommendation must be ratified by the Village Board of Trustees at a future meeting.
