Thornton adopts 2026 state legislative agenda focusing on local control, transportation, water, housing and older adults

Deputy City Manager Rob Kolstad presented Thornton’s 2026 state legislative agenda and recommended council adopt priorities to guide staff and lobbyists during the state legislative session, which opened the next day.
Kolstad said the agenda groups priorities under local control and funding, transportation, public safety, water security, housing, sustainability and a newly added older-adult focus. "Older adults is a new priority that was added at council's direction this year," he said, framing that item around housing, transportation and safety for older residents.
Council member Alge introduced the resolution and noted the legislative dinner next week; council voted to adopt the agenda unanimously. Kolstad said staff would brief lobbyists and return items to council for discussion as bills arise during the session.
Next steps: the city’s lobbyists and staff will use the adopted agenda to prioritize bills and identify items for council review during the 2026 legislative session.
