Michael Rosen presented a request co‑sponsored by the Veterans Department for a restoration of the World War I Krupp howitzer on Town Hall’s front lawn. The cannon, manufactured in 1917 and exhibited since 1928, shows rust and foundational damage; Rosen said the previous restoration left wheels untouched and that a more robust restoration is now required.
The application asks for $114,000 including a 20 percent contingency to cover sanding and catalyzed repainting of the barrel, stabilizing and repairing wooden wheels (including refabrication of damaged spokes), repairing crumbling limestone base work and site logistics such as fencing and prep. Rosen said the restoration is likely to be off‑site and that the cannon and Town Hall are elements of a historic designation; members cautioned that private volunteers cannot perform work that affects National Register protections.
Staff said they would provide more detailed bid and logistics information for Town Meeting materials. No vote was taken at the hearing.
