Mister Smith was elected chair of the Wythe County Board of Supervisors for 2026 and Mister Morgan was approved as vice chair during the board's Jan. 13 meeting. The board opened nominations, received a motion and second for Smith's nomination and carried the motion with one abstention; Morgan was later approved by voice vote as vice chair.
The new chair presented his slate of chair-appointed committee members, including rosters for budget, buildings and grounds, economic development, fire and rescue, personnel, and water and wastewater committees. The board approved the chair's appointments and a separate slate of board-appointed representatives to outside bodies, including the Alcohol Safety Action Program and several regional authorities.
Board members also approved the rules and procedures and the county's electronic meeting policy for 2026 and adopted the 2026 meeting and holiday calendar. A scheduling change noted by staff moved the June meeting to June 30 and adjusted the November meeting to Thursday, Nov. 12.
The board approved these items by motion and roll-call or voice votes as recorded at the meeting. Several appointments (for example to the Mount Rogers Community Service seat) were deferred pending legal review or clarification of term dates.
The meeting moved from leadership and appointments into routine business and committee scheduling; no additional action on committee composition was taken at the session's close.
