Commission approves edits to youth services survey, staff to finalize wording and legal review
Summary
Commissioners and youth commenters recommended language changes to a draft youth survey—adding a makerspace option, volunteer-hour opportunities, making schedule questions nonrequired and rewording an open-ended prompt; the commission approved sending the revised survey to staff with two commissioners to finalize wording and city-attorney review before distribution.

Community Services Coordinator Jordan Bell presented a draft youth services survey aimed primarily at South Pasadena Unified School District students and seeking input on program interests, gaps and scheduling.
Commissioners, a public commenter and youth participants suggested edits to keep the survey concise and more inclusive: add a "makerspace" option (robotics, 3-D printing, design and build, handcrafting), include a "volunteer hour opportunities" checkbox with examples (special events, camps), make the scheduling question nonrequired and reword an open-ended item to ask, "If you were to show up, what would you want to do there?" rather than directing respondents toward "issues or projects." Staff said both paper and digital formats (QR code/Google Form) will be used and that the city attorney will review legal implications for collecting information from minors.
Commissioners asked staff to consider how to reach youth who do not attend South Pasadena Unified School District, including use of social media channels and partnerships with ASB groups; staff said they will use the department's Instagram, school channels and a possible press release to broaden outreach.
With those edits and the understanding that staff and a small working group of commissioners will finalize wording, the commission voted to approve sending the survey forward for finalization, city-attorney review and distribution to the school district and broader youth audiences.
The motion passed on a roll-call vote of commissioners present; staff will return with a timeline and the final questionnaire for city-council review as needed.
