Board adopts policy allowing stock bronchodilators in schools under state law

The Anne Arundel County Board of Education unanimously adopted Policy JECC, permitting school nurses and designated school personnel to administer stock bronchodilators to any student in kindergarten through grade 12 who is experiencing asthma-related symptoms or perceived respiratory distress, regardless of prior diagnosis.
Grace Wilson, director of legislation and policy, said the policy implements House Bill 86 (2024), which authorizes school nurses and designated personnel to possess and administer stock bronchodilators. "As a reminder, this policy is being adopted in accordance with House Bill 86 from 2024, which authorizes school nurses and designated school personnel to administer a stock bronchodilator to a student in kindergarten through grade 12 who is experiencing asthma related symptom or perceived to be experiencing asthma related symptoms," Wilson said.
A motion to adopt JECC as written was made and seconded; the board recorded a unanimous roll-call vote (7-0). The policy was presented on third reading and adopted subject to final style and formatting corrections.
