Finance committee OKs $500,000 municipal grant for Sono roundabout near South Norwalk Elementary

The Norwalk City Finance & Claims Committee on Jan. 15 approved a $500,000 special appropriation to support the Sono roundabout project at the intersection of Meadow Street, Wilson Avenue and South Main Street, adjacent to South Norwalk Elementary School.
Ben Young of the Transportation, Mobility & Parking (TMP) office summarized the two-phase scope: phase 1 removes an old rail spur abutment and clears obstructing elements; phase 2 builds the roundabout, new roadway alignment and sidewalks. Young said the roundabout diameter is expected to be between 100 and 120 feet, with a truck apron sized to allow tractor-trailer, fire apparatus and bus turns.
Funding for the project combines three sources: $1 million in city capital funds (approved in September 2023), a $2.5 million Community Investment Fund (CIF) grant from the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development (contract execution pending) and the $500,000 municipal grant-and-aid amount the committee approved to secure design fees and construction timing. Young said TMP hopes to begin spring work and scheduled public outreach, including a community meeting at the adjacent elementary school on Feb. 2 at 5:30 p.m.
Committee members asked about dimensions and technical details; Young pointed to figures in the agenda packet and said final plans and exact dimensions are being refined by staff and contractors. The committee’s voice vote to authorize the appropriation was recorded as unanimous.
The appropriation authorization unlocks local funds to match other grants and keep the project on the intended construction timeline.
