Commission approves revised librarian classification; ALA accreditation marked as "highly desirable"

Glendale's Civil Service Commission approved revisions to the librarian class specification Jan. 14 to better reflect the professional breadth of duties across the library system and to support workforce development.
HR explained the revision makes a master's in library science (MLS/MLIS) the stated educational requirement while noting that an MLS/MLIS from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited or reciprocal institution would be "highly desirable" but not mandatory. Library leadership and HR said applicants without the degree would not be excluded. The Glendale City Employees Association reviewed the proposed changes and offered no additional concerns.
Commissioners sought clearer formatting so applicants easily distinguish the minimum education requirement from the desirable accreditation. HR and library staff agreed to place the phrase "American Library Association" in quotation marks for clarity. The commission moved, seconded and approved the specification with that formatting clarification by roll call.
The library intends to review the rest of the classification series to align future updates.
