County outlines scope of 1400 Avenue HRR widening and bridge replacement

County highway staff provided commissioners with details about a Highway Recovery/Resilience project on 1400 Avenue between Jeep and Key Road.
Staff said the project will widen the road, add shoulders (three feet of solid road and two feet of fill on each side), replace a bridge and address seven structures under the road. "We'll get 3 foot of solid road, 2 foot of dirt on each side," the presenter said, and noted that ditches will be brought up to modern standards. The presentation included an estimate that about 54 feet of property will be affected and require acquisition for right-of-way.
Commissioners discussed funding and scope. Staff said HRR funding currently allocated to this project covers roughly one mile and quoted a figure of about $1,200,000 for the HRR award for that segment; staff emphasized that the county has sought larger mileages in prior applications and has worked down to a one-mile request to secure funding.
Commissioners acknowledged the project’s benefits for road safety but noted the county budget cannot absorb repeated $1 million-plus expenditures for one-mile projects each year. No formal vote was required at the meeting; staff will proceed with landowner notifications and surveying as part of preconstruction planning.
