Botanic Garden reports positive early feedback on State Street native‑plant pilot

Eric Cardenas, director of impact and advocacy at the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden, addressed the Historic Landmarks Commission during general public comment to report early results from a native‑plant pilot on the 1200 block of State Street.
"Last month on December 6, we put about 200 native plants in the ground on the 1,200 block," Cardenas said. He told commissioners the effort involved roughly 40 volunteers and that the newly planted specimens have withstood recent storms. The pilot includes interpretive signage and a QR survey; Cardenas reported there were 59 responses in the first month and that "97% love the project…97% want to see more plants on State Street." He added that 88% of respondents said they would consider planting native species on their own properties with appropriate resources, and 85% of respondents were local.
Commissioners thanked the Botanic Garden and Friends of State Street for their work, encouraged colleagues to visit the pilot block, and said they look forward to a six‑month update if the Garden returns with one.
The comments were heard during the meeting’s general public comment period; no formal action was required or taken on the pilot at this meeting.
